In one of the most aggressive moves in the HD war yet, Sony Australia has announced it will give away free PlayStation 3 consoles with every one of its 1080p televisions.
Buy a 1080p Bravia between now and January and get a PS3 thrown in.
From 21 December until 21 January 2008 customers who buy one of the BRAVIA XBR, X or W series LCDs will receive a 40GB PS3 (worth $699).
With the 40-inch W series starting at AU$2,999 this would be a relatively inexpensive way to get into HD and the (admittedly still small) world of Blu-ray movies.
"Our Full HD BRAVIA range shows the phenomenal detail possible with high definition, and what better way to experience this than through the Blu-ray-enabled PS3," senior product manager for Visual at Sony Australia Graham Keogh said in a press release.
"Sony is as much about content as we are about hardware. Now, consumers will get the best of both worlds with this full high-definition combination," he said.

Wow, this seems like an amazing offer, i myself bought a Xbox 360 console with a 28" Viewsonic LCD, because the PS3 was dearer, and the LCD was on special. But with this package it seems like a decent and "..relatively inexpensive way to get into HD.." three cheers for Sony, smart marketing strategy.

Well, I picked up one of these the other day. Just waiting for my PS3 to arrive. But now no matter what they say about not jumping in on the format war anyone who allready has a 360 for games (like me) and gets a PS3 is set. No matter what wins its no more then the cost of the HD DVD drive add on for the 360 to get the other format. Seems perfect to me. As they always say "the best of both worlds." You get the best games console (the 360), the most powerful (the PS3), a way to download movies on demand (Xbox LIVE... at least when this feature comes to aus, or just pick up a Apple TV like I did), and last but not least the option to watch movies in DVD, HD DVD or Blu-ray. You cant loose no matter who looses.
