hunz's style may be hard to pinpoint, but his goal is a simple one: to bring music and art and animation together in one place. His work is a reflection of the death of post-modernism. Everything new has been done; he only copies and pastes. He places the absolute of one feeling here and then puts another one over there. It is detached. It is disjointed. But it still smiles while remaining personal and close. His vocals change to suit the personality and feeling in each song, but he manages to knit a thread that remains distinctly "hunz". It is unusual, because it pulls apart that which is familiar -- leaving the listener stretched as a person, much like life.
His influences may help explain where he gets his philosophy. When asked about music that is important to him, hunz replied, "Kate Bush is the mother of feelings in music for me. Then everyone that added on to that -- Bjork, Mum. And then people who just thought music needed more pasting around -- Aphex Twin, Amon Tobin, Plex, Boards of Canada, Squarepusher and telefon tel aviv."
hunz has a heart for people. Throughout his travels over the years, he would sit for hours after concerts talking with people about life. There is nothing more important to him then life. However, he quickly noticed there has been one common theme. It seems humankind is trying to breathe and not get suffocated or pulled down by this world. hunz says, "I feel the same. I feel like a huge wave of apathy has fallen down on this place, taking my friends to depression--some to pure darkness and others to absolute madness. It is time it stopped."
hunz actually started with music back in 1988 when his brother brought home an amiga500. After seeing "Megademo I" by Northstar/Fairlight, hunz fell in love with computer music. For the next few years, he bugged his brother to show him more "demos", and eventually, in 1990, he got his hands on a tracker called "Protracker". At the time, this was the tool used to create all computer music, so hunz started downloading tunes on local BBS (Bulletin Board Service)to look through the songs and learn how to track. Though he was sheltered from most mainstream music while growing up, he was able to listen to this computer music (game, demo) from artists all around the world. In 1991, he began releasing his own tunes to local BBS and started gaining a reputation.
As people heard and enjoyed hunz's tracks, they invited him into their demo groups. Most demo groups he joined turned into game companies, and he was soon writing music for ID, Apogee and ElectronicArts. hunz has become something of a legend in the computer music scene winning several online songwriting competitions, and he was one of the last members to join the elite tracking group Five Musicians. He is known for breaking the rules and bringing vocals into demo music. IGN counted him in the Top 10 Computer Music Artists and referred to him as "a master composer". hunz was there for the birth of the scene and, unfortunately, the crumble of it. While the scene today is a ghost of what it once was, it is the place where hunz grew up, and it still influences his music today.
hunz was also involved with a hard-emo band called "beanbag". His role was to provide vocals for the bands tracks. Beanbag started in 1994 and took a serious turn in 1999 when they signed with American label, Inpop Records. He left Australia and toured the States for the next 4 years. Late in 2003, beanbag decided to call it a day, and hunz headed back home.
hunz's creativity is not limited to the world of music; he has a passion for the visual arts as well. hunz did not study art, per se, but rather fell into it. He did graphical layout for a magazine company in Australia called Cram that was a Raygun-inspired magazine. He later became the editor of the computer-game section. He did all the print work for his band Beanbag and eventually started learning HTML which allowed him to do all the layout and design for his own personal sites and for those of his many demo groups. When he landed in the States, he did artwork for bands such as Newsboys and become the in-house artist for his record label. During his many hours traveling on the road with the band, hunz committed to studying 3d-art and learnt animation techniques. When hunz returned to Australia, he wanted to take a break from music, and since he enjoyed motion graphics, this was the direction he went when he began looking for work. He soon landed a job at a production company called Invision Media where he works as a freelance in-house animator/motion gfx/visual fx director. Additionally, he works with a video-clip company called Tactical Recon for whom he has animated two award-winning videos thus far.
His website hunz.com.au and his live show are where the elements come together. Music that is seen. Art that is heard.
