Telstra hiptop 2 User reviews  Editors' choice

By David Flynn on 03/11/2006

More Telstra reviews , RRP: AU$589.00

The good:

  • Handles mobile email, instant messaging, SMS and Web browsing
  • $30/month plan allows unlimited data
  • Superb keyboard is none of the best of its kind
  • Fuss-free interface is easy to navigate

The bad:

  • Contract requires a two-year commitment
  • No MP3 player, PC connectivity or memory card expansion
  • Digital camera is barely one step above a Box Brownie

The bottomline:

With consumer-friendly mobile email, instant messaging, SMS and even Web browsing, and a deal that gives you almost unlimited data for $1 per day, Telstra's hiptop 2 looks set to become BlackBerry for teens and twentysomethings -- it could even topple an iPod as the hottest thing under the Christmas tree this year.

The hiptop works with a prepaid sim, but you can't access the web browser, email, or msn/yahoo messengers. You can text and make phone calls, and use features like the games and task managers etc, but that's about it.
You can't gain access to all the hiptops features without signing up to the plan.

It may be the older model Hiptop, but it's still a fantastic phone. I've had mine for nearing 2 years now and I've only ever had one problem with it (I wore some of the contacts down on some buttons. From over use. Go figure). I will be sad to upgrade.
Srsly, if you're that pissed about it not playing music... buy an iPod.

Pros: Probably one of the best keyboards in terms of typing compared to newer models.
Good internet connection. It's no broadband but it goes alright.
$30 a month. Bargain. Especially if you're a teen because you really get your moneys worth with unlimited text and internet.

Cons: Yeah, the camera is really crap but it's a phone. Not a camera.
You can't do much to customize it in terms of themes.
Bigpond catalogue for ringtones, games, aps etc. is expensive.
And why don't these phones come with an inbuilt alarm system.
