Samsung D820 User reviews

By Emily Baxter, CNET.com.au on 15/06/2006

More Samsung reviews , RRP: AU$775.00

The good:

  • 1.3 megapixel camera
  • Voice recorder
  • Bluetooth connectivity
  • Up to 60 minutes of video recording

The bad:

  • Awkward slide design

The bottomline:

The Samsung SGH D820 is a good all-round quad-band phone with some great features including a 1.3-megapixel camera, decent quality voice recorder and an MP3/AAC/AAC+ music player. Largely it is easy to use without requiring in-depth study of its user guide but occasionally the design lets it down.

I upgraded from the D500 - and am not disappointed at all! I have read many reviews and the worst thing i read is that the silder is a bit clunky. To be honest - it's not very clunky at all. In comparison with the Nokia sliders - it's just the same. I'm not sure whether this is a pro or con, but when sending an SMS, the default option is send rather that send & save. To send & save just takes an extra 2 button pushes. The text in the SMS's is much bigger then i'm used to. Good or bad? I don't know.

Pros: The resolution and screen size are amazing. The 240x320 screen is perfect for putting photos on - and when you add the photos at the correct size they aren't resized to be smaller when they appear as wallpaper, as with previous phones. While SMSing, i was really impressed that there was a recently used recipient list, it made it much easier. The camera takes really good photos for a phone camera, even though it is only 1.3MPixels.
Having an alarm that you can set your own song to is fantastic. I really didn't enjoy waking up to the Samsung alarm tones that was the only option with the earlier models. The phone will charge when plugged in to the USB - which is really good if you're uploading/downloading stuff and then don't have time to charge after. Its much quicker to perform its functions that the equivalent Nokia series. The sound quality from the dual speakers very clear. Also, this phone has inbuilt speaker phone, unlike the D500 whichhad an attachable bit, which ended up being frustrating as, because of its small size, often went missing! Oh, and another amazing feature that i'd never heard of before - a SOS function, that in an emergency will send an SMS to a nominated recipient, and then when they call you back it doesn't ring, but answers straight away on speakerphone - and you can't hear them but they can hear you. Maybe i think its great because i'm a girl - but it gives me a lot of reassurance.

Cons: When i first started using the phone, i often pressed the # key instead of the 9 - but i guess its what you're used to. I don't have a problem with that anymore.
This is the con that probably bugs me the most - you can't add your own message tones. Sure, ringtones and alarm tones, yes, but not message tones. And to be honest Samsung doesn't put a wide variety, or many appealling message tones on their phones.

concerning outlook syncing

Pros: There is PIM management once linked to a computer. you can do so throgh bluetooth or through data cable. using the pcsync software (downloadable from the samsung website), you can transfer your calendar, phonebook, and tasks. Using the same software, you can transfer music to and from the phone using the same software and overall, it's a really nice experience. Oh, and there is a very good sms management system when you sync the phone

Cons: no e-mail syncing: you can't sync your outlook e-mails on the phone

New ... Still ZTrying to figure it out

Pros: Looks sleek Has a WOW effect on almost any one who sees it. I like the voice recorder caller ID and also the flip camera. By the way to straighten the picture... all u need to do is press the volume UP button. the vol DOWN button flips the image verically... :)

Cons: the front buttons invariably get pressed while opening the slide.
There is NO sychonize feature with MS Outlook which I think is a Bummer...
The car adaptor is not available easily.

Very happy, not a bad choice

to answer a question i saw posted about the camera: you can mirror the image horizontally or turn it right side up or upside down (depending which way the camera is facing) via the volume selector on the left side of the phone.

Pros: Fast, easy, can kill a call with the slider (i do this alot once done with a call). layout is nice. photo quality is good. video fps is great!

Cons: have to zoom into word, excel & pdf docs if you want to read > this is annoying as you have to scroll left to right to left to right, etc. cannot use any other tones as message alert other than the phones default one's. no macro on photo's.

Fantastic nothing to worry about it.

Believe me I purchased a second hand taking risk but in one day I became familiar with all its functions and I really love it. No problem at all. The appearance is very cute and amusing. All features very simple to use. I read the reviews about negative comments: mp3 ringtones can't be changed, Wallpaper can't be enlarged,
Bluetooth poor response, these all just rubbish you need to spend sometime to know how to use it.You will be more satisfied with rich features embedded in this cute mobile. To be frank the operation & using all features mentioned in the phone are simple just keep going. Even the music player is very good, Samsung recommends bluetooth stereo headset but through the phone speakers and provided hear-phones the sound is quite good. How much more one can expect from single source! I am fond of this phone & I don't want to say something which is not true but only to cheat you.

Pros: Very simple to get acquinted with the phone if you pay attention for few hours. Looks very attractive. funtions are very useful. Media Player/Camera/Bluetooth all userfriendly. Maximise all applications by only paying little attention. Go and get it. It is a greatphone.

Cons: Nothing to say except some say about battery should be little more powerful.
