Microsoft has unveiled pricing for the upcoming Xbox 360. The next generation console will come in two flavours -- a basic 'core' system and a bundle which includes a 20GB hard drive -- with prices starting from approximately AU$400.

Microsoft has confirmed US and European pricing for the Xbox 360, but as yet has not outlined Australian pricing. Microsoft Home Entertainment Division Australia and New Zealand regional director David McLean has, however, stated that local cost will be "in line with the North American and European prices."

The Xbox 360 Core System will sell for US$299.99 (AU$394)/299.99 euros (AU$484). The upgrade Premium Edition will retail for US$399.99 (AU$526)/399.99 euros (AU$645).

The Xbox 360 Core package, which will not be backwards compatible with current Xbox games, will include:

  • Xbox 360 console
  • Xbox 360 wired controller
  • Xbox 360 faceplate
  • Xbox 360 standard AV cable

Buyers of the Xbox360 Core package will need to buy a hard drive to make the system play current Xbox games, a Microsoft spokesman said.

The Xbox 360 Premium package, which will be fully backwards compatible out of the box, includes:

  • Xbox 360 console
  • Xbox 360 20GB detachable hard drive
  • Xbox 360 wireless controller
  • Xbox 360 Media Remote
  • Xbox 360 faceplate
  • Xbox 360 Component AV cable
  • Xbox Live Silver membership

Microsoft is still aiming for an early 2006 release for the Xbox 360 in Australia, with a pre-Christmas 2005 date set for North America, Europe and Japan.

Other accessories announced by Microsoft today include:

  • Xbox 360 20GB detachable hard drive - US$99.99
  • Xbox 360 64MB memory unit - US$39.99
  • Xbox 360 wireless controller - US$49.99
